Model 17
1903 model year.
8 hp engine, 78" wheelbase.
Still uses an easily-removeable tonneau. 2-speed planetary transmission.
The factory-supplied paint color is called London Smoke, which period accounts describe as "a peculiar shade of brown."
Horseless Age, Dec. 31, 1902
Earliest known photo of Model 17, used in much Thomas
advertising. Note that it has the "kicked up" front fenders of
the Model 18.
The above photograph, rendered into the 1903 Advance Catalog. This gives a better view of some details.
1940 VMCCA Raceland meet
This movie still frame comes from 37 years after this car was built, but it is included here
because it shows the factory colors of London Smoke
with vermilion running gear, and the kicked-up front fenders.
It was owned by Edward C. Clark, who had recently purchased it "when its original owner gave it up in despair."
This car exists today, with these surfaces intact.
